The task of the teacher is to take something complicated and make it simple enough for students to apprehend. Every person who learns did so on a journey from the obvious and vague to the less obvious and clear. Once we apprehend the clear, we are tempted to teach others in a way that shortcuts that journey and inhibits wonder. We want to tell them the end. But teaching is reliving that journey. In teaching, you guide students on the path, equipping them to walk it on their own. You cannot tell students what they must discover themselves. To teach, you must learn to relive the journey so that your students might recover their wonder.
Unfortunately, teaching in this way doesn't come naturally.
So join us May 10-11 for a CiRCE Regional Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina to contemplate the best ways to do this.
