Every creative act requires courage: the courage to look at a blank space and make something of it, something that will, by virtue of existing, be judged. The artist, author, and musician must take up their tools nonetheless and begin their craft. Yet, many would-be-creators fail to do so, for memories of imperfect work paralyze them. We will never have the courage to begin if we can’t face the imperfect—if we can’t allow ourselves to create something to fix. And in order to create something to fix, we must know how to fix. And so, the end enables the beginning. We must learn to edit if we hope to brave the blank page.
This course will provide all writers with the tools to face the imperfections in their writing. Each week, the teacher will provide examples of editing and guide the students through editing their own work. Students will bring one work they wish to edit at the beginning of the course and edit it in rounds throughout the course.
This course is designed for adult writers, but high school students with foundational grammar skills are welcome to attend. This course is not designed to teach basic rules of grammar.
Learn with Writer, Editor, Teacher, and Artist, Katerina Kern, as she guides you through the creative act of editing. After countless years of writing and re-writing, she has developed this course to share the skills and methods she uses every day as an Editor and Writing Teacher.
