Classical Rhetoric: Lost Tools of Writing Level I Pre-Course
Teacher: Karen Kern
The goal of this class is to prepare 6th and 7th graders for The Lost Tools of Writing Level 1 with a year-long study in thinking and writing well. We will focus on the canon of invention: how to come up with an issue, how to write a thesis statement, how to come up with ideas using an ANI chart, and how to formulate a basic persuasive essay.
Additionally, we will discuss and practice grammar, including what a sentence is, parts of speech, and using strong verbs with correct tenses. With Tales of Wonder Vol. 1 and 2, we will develop reading skills and learn the basics of layered reading by highlighting and reading closely. All this will take place in the context of working through approximately the first half of Level I of The Lost Tools of Writing.
Suggested Age: 11 and up
Prerequisites: Desire to think and write well
Required Texts: The Lost Tools of Writing Level I - Student Workbook, Tales of Wonder Volumes I and II
