Beowulf - 90 Minutes with the Classics (webinar)

Tuesday, September 15, 2020 - 4:00pm to 5:30pm

When: September 15th, 4:00-5:30pm EST
Where: Online
Cost: Only $10!
Mark Twain once said that a classic is “a book that people praise and don’t read.” Why is that the case? Some fail to read the classics because they do not know where to begin, others because they feel overwhelmed or intimidated by them. 90 Minutes with the Classics attempts to remedy those problems and prepare you to read them well.
Many consider Beowulf tedious to read, difficult to teach, and therefore, hard to enjoy. Others claim it is too simple, too direct, or too pagan (or too Christian!). Yet, despite such criticisms, Beowulf will not go away. In this webinar, Brian Phillips takes another look at Beowulf and the surprising harmony, richness, and importance of the poem which, as Tolkien said, made “keen that touch upon the heart which sorrows have that are both poignant and remote.”
In this webinar, you will:
·      Discuss responses to the common criticisms of Beowulf
·      Grow to understand the important place the poem has in Western literature
·      Explore connections between the poem and other classic works
·      Receive tips for reading and teaching Beowulf
·      And much more!
The seminar will be recorded; however, you must sign up before September 15th to have access to it. Registration will be cut off at 2:30pm (EST) on September 15th.

Please note that login information for the seminar will be sent an hour before the seminar.
