Presented at the CiRCE Spring Regional Conference 2022.

Who are you? We may want to answer that question in many different ways. A necessary part of that definition addresses the past. Taking stock of where we come into the story, recognizing that the story does not start with us, is one important role history can play in education. History can be put to many uses, some of them unlovely. This talk will turn to Flannery O'Connor's short story, "Everything that Rises Must Converge," to argue that reckoning with history can help us understand ourselves better and be generous with others.
