The Devil Loves a Picky Eater
Presented at the A Contemplation of Glory Conference 2021.
St. John declares that the Father has given all things into Christ’s hands, while St. Paul tells us we are Christ’s co-heirs. But in an age of boutique entertainment, specialized diets, and vain dissipation, “all things” can be a hard pill to swallow. We don’t want to affirm the goodness of God’s world—our birthright—if that includes dissenting opinions on the radio, Brussels sprouts, or a Regency novel about manners. A proper preparation for glory, then, means putting pickiness to death, replacing it with taste, and stretching the soul until it is large enough to embrace the whole cosmos.
