Nicolas Gomez Davila wrote, “the modern world will not be punished; it is the punishment.” In this talk, Heidi White proposes that modernity suffers from a traumatic loss of meaning-making stories. Technology and ideology are kings of the wasteland. Even Western Christians are conditioned from within the church to understand our faith as reasonable but not imaginative. But this is a diabolical dichotomy. The world does not need us to offer better arguments, but a better story. The Great Tradition is at once rational and mystical, true and beautiful, intellectual and imaginative. Drawing from the world’s rich heritage of meaning-making stories, Heidi presents a profoundly counter-cultural vision of the world as an enchanted, sacramental cosmos.
