“I don’t like this world!” Wrestling With Stories that Make Us Uncomfortable

Perhaps you have had the experience of discussing literature with a group of students (or your own group of children, who might actually be wrestling in the middle of the floor!) and someone makes the bold assertion that “I don’t like this!” Perhaps you have read a book and found yourself squirming, or questioning, or disagreeing with the author, the plot, or the premise. What does it look like to enter into a story as a guest and not a judge? How can we emerge from a story with kindness and not cynicism? To pull, wrench, or wrest the value from what we read can take work. Let’s talk about how to do this well!
