While children need explicit rules and standards for moral behavior, they also need well-crafted images of goodness that make virtue seem appealing and worthy of emulation. C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia provides readers with images of all seven moral virtues–prudence, temperance, justice, fortitude, faith, hope, and love. In this session, we will look at how Lewis uses a minor character to cultivate hope (the “forgotten virtue”) in readers. Participants will see the role that memory plays in cultivating hope. They will also observe hope’s relationship to the other two theological virtues: faith and love.
