Today, most public references to “form” (especially among Christians eager to be relevant and attractive) refer to superficial, structural, rhetorical, or ornamental aspects of what really matters: content. “Form” is assumed to be the (disposable) husk conveying a precious kernel. But “form” once designated the essence of a thing, and the word’s demotion signals the loss of confidence in the world’s intelligibility and goodness, which downgrades the work of education into training for utilitarian efficiency. With help from Josef Pieper and others, Ken Myers will explore how a richer conception of form is central to classical education (and to Christian theology).
