If education begins in imitation, then the primary question of our students will be, “who ought I follow?” Thus the most important lesson we can teach our young students is how to listen to the right voices, a first step towards proper piety. We must also teach them of imitation itself. How might they imitate their teachers’ loves, habits, or even processes of reason- ing? Then, according to Augustine, this foundation of imitation if properly trained will flower into an art, as he says that, “an art joins imitation with reason.” This session will explore how these themes of imitation all weave together to create a circle of paideia.
