“The King of the Golden River” is one of the first and greatest of Victorian fairy tales. It is the story of three brothers, the goodness of the youngest, Gluck, and the wickedness, of his older brothers, and the judgment that nature and numinous powers bring as reward and punishment. Ruskin infused his story with profound biblical allusions and an ecological and sacramental sensibility.
