A Thanksgiving Reader: Thoughts for around the table

Nov 26, 2014

Thanksgiving Day joins together friends and family to feast, laugh, and reflect upon the innumerable blessings of God upon each of us; some of the most important ones gathered around the table.  And, while Thanksgiving has sadly morphed into “Turkey Day” for many – a day to eat too much, watch football games they don’t care much about, and plan Black Friday shopping – the act of giving thanks is important.

So, in the interest of cultivating thankful hearts, here is a brief “reader” for Thanksgiving Day – a collection of Scripture and quotes that can be used at your family gathering, around your Thanksgiving table, or even personally, as you reflect upon what God has done for you and your loved ones.

“Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise!  Give thanks to him; bless his name!” – Psalm 100:4

“Gratitude can transform common days into Thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” – William Arthur Ward

“Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has plenty; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.” – Charles Dickens

“Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High” – Psalm 50:14

“Our rural ancestors, with little blest,
Patient of labour when the end was rest,
Indulged the day that housed their annual grain,
With feasts, and off’rings, and a thankful strain.”
– Alexander Pope

“A thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue, but the parent of all the other virtues.” – Cicero

“Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!” – Psalm 95:2

“Perhaps it takes a purer faith to praise God for unrealized blessings than for those we once enjoyed or those we enjoy now.” – A.W. Tozer

“Nothing is more honorable than a grateful heart.” – Seneca

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” – Philippians 4:6

“All that we behold is full of blessings.” – William Wordsworth

“O Lord that lends me life,
Lend me a heart replete with thankfulness.”
– William Shakespeare
