In light of my recent discussion with David Kern and Chris Perrin, I thought I would share my first adjustment of the school year. One of the greatest advantages of homeschooling is the ability to make adjustments. There is the danger of making so many adjustments that we never settle in to the work at hand but otherwise it is a great benefit to be able to change something that is not working.

Join me as I think out loud.

I had an epiphany a couple of weeks ago.  Being a philosopher of sorts I enjoy those. This summer I read a book which described an ‘addiction to epiphanies’ and I recognized that I might be accused of this. Of course, if you come from a place of great ignorance there are more places for the light to shine meaningfully. I think I am not addicted, only very hungry.

Words matter. This is the lesson of Christian classical education. This is the logos of John 1. This is where there is love. It's why I sometimes get alarmed.

It is summer. Well, almost. The natives are restless. The teacher is thinking of next year or if she is a homeschool mom she may be considering cleaning the bathroom.  This summer I am reading Edith Schaeffer’s The Hidden Art of Homemaking.

David recently asked us how we use technology in the classroom. I would have answered but the question stressed me out. I am not far from being a philosophical Luddite and yet I use technology quite a bit in my home.

I  named my blog Ordo Amoris. My husband tells me it is a bit ridiculous and sometimes when I find myself repeating the title to a stranger I see what he means. But I love the name anyway. Those two little words represent everything I believe about education and even when I am talking to a stranger it doesn’t take me too long to explain.

Ordo sounds like ‘order’ and Amoris comes from the Latin word for love therefore Ordo Amoris is the ordering of the loves or affections. But you already knew that.

Recently, events in Libya have rocked our nation. Whether the Main-Stream-Media admits it or not, Americans care about these things; at the very least, mothers care. As the mother of a Green Beret, I care. Into the midst of all this comes the revelation that a man we all consider good, General David Petraeus, the director of the CIA no less, has acted contrary to even the most basic definition of honor. We are tempted to dismiss this lack of valor as just a smokescreen, as indeed it is, and yet there it is: an honorable man acting dishonorably to those under his care.
