2010 Paideia Prize Winner
Announced
The winner of the 2010 Paideia Prize, given
annually at the CiRCE Conference for lifetime contribution to
classical education, has been voted upon and the results ar in.
This year's prize winners are Dr. Glenn and
Virginia Arbery.
Glenn Arbery is the d'Alzon Professor of Liberal
Education at Assumption College in Worcester, MA. In the past,
he has held teaching positions in literature at the University
of St. Thomas in Houston and Thomas More College of Liberal
Arts. He directed the Teacher's Academy at the Dallas Institute
of Humanities and Culture from 1997 to 2003. From 2003 to 2008,
he was senior editor of People Newspapers in Dallas, where he
received first-place honors in state and national film
reviewing, columns and editorial competitions. Dr. Arbery is
also the author of Why Literature Matter: Permanence and the
Politics of Reputation (2001) and the editor of The Tragic Abyss
(2004) and The Southern Critics: An Anthology (2010).
The Lost
Tools of Writing, Level 2, Coming April 19th!
Coming April 19th, The Lost Tools of Writing™,
Level Two, is meant primarily for students who have completed
Level One of the program. Carefully building on the structure
and lessons of Level One, Level Two includes a new emphasis on
Narrative writing, dozens of new tools, and
lessons on three new kinds of essay writing.

2009 Paideia
Prize Winner, Laura Berquist, to Speak at Atlanta-area
Homeschool Conference, April 23rd.
Mrs. Laura
Berquist, the 2009 Paideia Prize winner for a lifetime
contributed to classical, Christian education, will be speaking
at the North Georgia Catholic Homeschooling Conference at North
Metro Technical College in Acworth, Georgia. Mrs. Berquist will
also be speaking twice on April 24th.

TOOLS OF WRITING ESSAY CONTEST Now Accepting Entries

Education and Liberty are themes as
American as baseball and apple pie. Yet, much of American
literature, and most of American pop culture see the two as
antithetical. Some people seem to see school as a barrier to
liberty. In the 2010 Lost Tools of Writing Essay Contest,
students are asked to consider the relationship between
education and liberty. Are they indeed opposites? Or can one
fulfill the other? Can a person be free without being educated?
Can a person be educated without being free?
