Dr. Peter V. Sampo To Receive
Annual Russell Kirk Paideia Prize:

Dr. Peter Sampo, president emeritus and a founder of Thomas More College of Liberal Arts in Merrimack, New Hampshire, will receive the CiRCE Institute's 2008 Russell Kirk Paideia Prize for Lifetime Contribution to Classical Education, sponsored by The Center for the American Idea. Dr. Sampo labored for years in an extremely difficult vineyard to bring Thomas More College to life and fruition.

Dr. Sampo is a founder of Thomas More College of Liberal Arts, where he serves as Distinguished Professor of Political Science and President Emeritus. He served as Dean of St. Francis College (1970-73); President of Magdalen College (1974-78); founding Chair of the Politics Department of St. Anselm College; and President of Thomas More College of Liberal Arts (1978-2006).

Dr. Sampo has dedicated his work to the importance of the formation of youth through initiation into Western culture and the urgency for educational institutions to provide a transformative experience through an exclusively liberal arts education. His own work has been in the recovery of the Classical tradition of political science from a Christian perspective.

He is a regular speaker at campuses across the country, has authored articles on Machiavelli and Thomas More, and was a contributor to The Recovery of American Education (University Press of America, 1991) and Life and Family. He was awarded a Commendation by the Society of Catholic Social Scientists and was named an Exemplary Alumnus by the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Sampo received his A.B. at St. Vincent College and his doctorate in Political Science at the University of Notre Dame.

Dr. Sampo will be honored at the Russell Kirk Paideia Prize Banquet during CiRCE's annual conference this July in Houston, Texas.
